Built in 1880 for under $1,100 by Nichols M. Powers, the Brown Bridge was the last bridge of his long career and is considered one of the finest and least-altered Town lattice truss bridges in the country; it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2014. It is believed to be the only standing covered bridge in the United States with a slate roof, and one abutment was built around an enormous natural boulder beside the Cold River. Named for nearby resident George Brown, the bridge took minor damage in Tropical Storm Irene's 2011 flooding, was closed, and reopened after rehabilitation in 2016.
