Built in 1866 for $9,000 by James F. Tasker and Bela J. Fletcher, framed in a nearby meadow and reassembled over the river, this fourth bridge at the site is the longest wooden covered bridge in the United States and the longest two-span covered bridge in the world, using a notched, bolted timber version of the Town lattice found nowhere else surviving. It began as a private toll bridge, was bought by New Hampshire in 1936 and made toll-free in 1943. It is listed on the National Register and designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
