Woodstock's Middle Bridge was built in 1969 by Milton Graton and his sons using traditional methods, its Town lattice held together by about 1,400 oak treenails and no structural steel, and a team of oxen, Ben and Joe, pulled it across the Ottauquechee into place over four and a half days. It was the first authentic public covered bridge built in Vermont since the 19th century, replacing a condemned iron bridge. Arsonists set it afire in 1974 during the Fireman's Ball; Graton restored it and it reopened in 1976.
