Solomon Emmons III built this bridge in 1836 after floods had washed away three earlier Taftsville crossings in 1807, 1811 and 1828, using no patented truss design but a craftsman multiple-kingpost system with semi-independent laminated arches, possibly influenced by Swiss building. It is the oldest covered bridge in Windsor County and among the oldest in the United States, and the second-longest covered bridge in Vermont. Irene undermined its south abutment in 2011, closing it for two years of restoration before it reopened in September 2013.
