Originally called the School Street Bridge, this span took its present name from the water-powered powerhouse the village of Johnson built just above it in 1895. Its deck was reinforced with steel I-beams in 1995 because of heavy truck traffic using the road as a shortcut, and that steelwork saved the deck when a heavy snow load collapsed the roof and walls into the river in the winter of 2000-2001. The bridge was reconstructed by Blow & Cote and reopened on June 29, 2002. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 9, 1974.
