Poland Covered Bridge in Cambridge, Vermont

Also called the Junction or Cambridge Junction Bridge, the Poland Bridge was built in 1887 by George W. Holmes and named for local official Judge Poland. A local newspaper complained in 1888 that the costly bridge and road benefited mainly Poland himself and predicted taxpayers would call it the Bridge of Sighs; Poland died in his hayfield the following summer without using it. After deterioration and a 1995 vehicle strike damaged its support system, the bridge was reconstructed beginning in 2003 with $1 million from the National Historic Bridge Program and reopened on July 4, 2004. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 9, 1974.
