π Montgomery Covered Bridge
Waterville, VT Β· built 1877
Known as the Middle Bridge because it sits between the Jaynes (Upper) and Village (Lower) bridges on the same river, the Montgomery Bridge was built by an unknown builder in the late 1870s and serves a single farm at the end of a dead-end road. In 1969 an uneven five-foot snowfall made the bridge lean until farmer Dallas Montgomery, for whom it is now named, cleared the roof and Wilmer Locke winched it upright and braced it. In 1971 an asphalt truck fell through its deck into the river, after which the bridge was reinforced with steel beams; major repairs followed in 1997. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
