Island Pond grew up as a railroad hub midway between Portland and Montreal, and its rail yard split the village in two, so residents have needed a footbridge over the tracks since the 1850s. After the previous footbridge was torn down in 1973, locals campaigned for decades for a replacement. The present covered Howe truss footbridge, built in 2003 and lifted into place in one piece by two cranes, reconnects the upper and lower halves of the village with covered stair approaches on both sides.
