Smith, the Gold Brook Bridge is Stowe's only surviving 19th-century covered bridge; sources differ on its truss, the state list recording queen post while Stowe sources describe it as Vermont's only 19th-century wooden Howe truss bridge still carrying a public road. Since the early 1970s it has been famous as Emily's Bridge for a ghost legend with no documented death behind it: in the best-known version, a young woman named Emily waited at the bridge to elope, her lover never came, and she died there, by hanging in some tellings and in a runaway wagon in others. Visitors still report voices, sounds, and scratches on cars, making it Vermont's best-known haunted bridge. It was rehabilitated in 1979 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
