East Montpelier's only surviving 19th-century covered bridge was both built by and named for farmer Larned Coburn, who offered to build a bridge near his house and give it to the town if the town would extend its road through the bridge so he could reach his land across the Winooski River; the town agreed. Heavy traffic from a nearby gravel pit led the town to replace the timber deck with steel beams and a concrete floor in 1972-73, leaving the queen post trusses to carry only the bridge itself. The trusses were renovated in the late 1990s.
