Voted into existence by Westford in November 1836 and built in 1837-38, the Westford bridge is one of Vermont's oldest covered bridges and the second-oldest of the Burr arch type in the state, yet it was never added to the National Register of Historic Places, though the state considers it eligible. Bypassed by a concrete bridge in 1965, it decayed until townspeople and a Navy Seabee reserve battalion made repairs in 1976. In 1987 it was hauled off the river for a full rehabilitation by Milton Graton's firm, work filmed by National Geographic, and after years of fundraising and abutment delays it was set back over the river and rededicated in 2001 as a pedestrian bridge.
