The original Bartonsville bridge, built in 1870 by Sanford Granger, became one of the defining images of Tropical Storm Irene when a home video showed it lifting off its abutments and floating down the Williams River on August 28, 2011. Rockingham committed to rebuilding a covered bridge rather than a modern span, and Cold River Bridges built a longer, stronger 168-foot replacement in 2012 using Pacific Northwest timber and laminated floor beams. The new bridge opened on January 26, 2013. The National Register listing on record is for the original bridge.
