The A.M. Foster Bridge was built in 1988-89 by Richard W. Spaulding on his Cabot Plains farm, modeled on the historic Martin (Orton Farm) Covered Bridge in Marshfield. It honors Alonzo Merrill Foster, a Cabot inventor of a maple sap spout, and was hand-built with spruce lumber and salvaged granite over a spring-fed, man-made pond, reportedly in under six weeks with help from Foster's descendants. The builders discovered too late that it was too narrow for modern farm equipment, a miscalculation the family found more amusing than annoying. Privately owned, it is now a much-photographed spot and occasional wedding venue.
