West Dover Beyond the Slopes: A Fall Guide to the Deerfield Valley

Mount Snow gets the winter glory, but the Deerfield Valley earns its keep all year โ€” fire towers, farm visits, a natural history museum, and an escape room for rainy days. Here's how to do a fall weekend around West Dover.

Everyone knows what West Dover does in winter. Mount Snow's trails are some of the closest big-mountain skiing to Boston and New York, and from December to April the valley runs on lift tickets and hot chocolate. But ask a local what the valley's best season is and a surprising number will say fall โ€” when the crowds thin, the maples light up, and everything that makes the Deerfield Valley worth visiting is still open, minus the lift lines.

Start with the views, because that's what October is for. The classic move is the fire tower on Mount Olga in Molly Stark State Park, just down Route 9 in Wilmington โ€” a 1.7-mile loop hike to a 360-degree panorama of peak color. Go on a weekday morning if you can; the tower is the valley's worst-kept secret in foliage season. For a bigger, wilder vista, Hogback Mountain in Marlboro serves up the famous 100-mile view across three states, with trails that stay quiet even on busy weekends.

Then ride the mountain without skis. Mount Snow runs scenic chairlift rides on the Bluebird Express into the fall โ€” the same sweeping view of the Somerset Reservoir and the Green Mountains you'd get in February, minus the wind chill. Down at the base, the Mount Snow Bike Park keeps the lifts spinning for downhill mountain bikers, with trails for first-timers as well as riders who know what they're doing. If you'd rather earn your views, the Valley Trail and the network of hiking trails around the resort are at their best when the leaves turn.

For families, the valley punches above its weight. The Southern Vermont Natural History Museum in Marlboro is the standout โ€” live owls, hawks, and other birds of prey, plus the kind of hands-on exhibits that keep kids engaged long after the adults expected to leave. Adams Family Farm in Wilmington is the valley's classic farm visit: animals to meet, fields to wander, and a farm stand worth building a lunch around. Closer to town, Dover Town Park on Route 100 has the playground-and-swings basics covered, and Horace Hill Recreation Area adds 53 acres of trails plus an 18-hole disc golf course the teenagers won't complain about.

Save something for the rainy day, because October in Vermont always deals you one. Mind Lock Escape Room, tucked into the Mount Snow Marketplace on Route 100 in West Dover, is the valley's best bad-weather answer โ€” family-run, with themed rooms that work for kids and adults alike. Book ahead on weekends; it's small and word has gotten out.

And don't skip the water. Harriman Reservoir โ€” the locals still call it Lake Whitingham โ€” is Vermont's largest lake entirely within the state, with 28 miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline. In fall it's quiet: good paddling, good fishing, and the kind of glassy-morning reflections photographers dream about. Put in at one of the public launches and you'll likely have it to yourself. Somerset Reservoir, up past the mountain, is wilder still.

Practical notes for the weekend: base yourself anywhere along the Route 100 corridor between West Dover and Wilmington and you're within fifteen minutes of nearly everything above. The valley's dining runs from ski-town casual to the Hermitage Inn's white-tablecloth splurge, and Wilmington's Main Street is worth an unhurried wander โ€” bookstores, galleries, and the country-store classics. Foliage usually peaks in the valley in the first two weeks of October, so sooner beats later.

West Dover in October is the valley at its most itself: the mountain still there, the crowds gone home, and everything else โ€” the towers, the farms, the museums, the water โ€” doing what it does all year. Come for the leaves. Stay for everything they were distracting you from.
