Vermont Crafts Council: Seventeen Loops, Two Days, and a Studio at the End of the Road

Fall Open Studio Weekend is October 3 and 4, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The council's loops map turns a statewide studio tour into a day's drive -- and Loop 9 runs through Springfield, Chester, Weston, Ludlow, and Cavendish.

The yellow signs go up twice a year. For one weekend in spring and one in fall, Vermont artists open the studio door and let people walk in and ask how the thing was made. Fall Open Studio Weekend is Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is free. No ticket. You need a loop.

The Vermont Crafts Council has run the tour for years. The council itself started in January 1990, when craftspeople, the state craft centers at Frog Hollow and Windsor House, galleries, and promoters decided Vermont makers needed one voice. At first they stuck to clay, fiber, glass, metal, and wood. Painters kept asking in. Membership opened to all visual artists. Today the council represents more than 260 artists, galleries, and art schools.

Director Martha Fitch has put the appeal simply: the tour takes you through small towns and back roads, with the yellow Open Studio signs and the studio-tour map guiding you in. The free booklet has the maps. Welcome centers stock it. The PDF is on the council site. On your phone, tour.vermontcrafts.com is the live map.

The point of the weekend is the bench, the wheel, and the person who will tell you why the glaze crawled. Buy the mug. Buy the needle. Or just stop. That is the council's argument, made in person.
