Don't believe the sign. The red clapboard faΓ§ade at 300 Mountain Road advertises the Loft Tavern as the "Home of Warm Beer, Lousy Food, and Grumpy Owner," and it has been fooling first-timers for years. The beer is cold, the food is the reason half of Ludlow eats here, and the owner β well, you'll have to judge that one yourself. This is the aprΓ¨s-ski dive across the road from the Okemo Mountain Resort parking lots, and it has been the local hangout at the base of the mountain since the day it opened.
Location is half the story. When the lifts stop turning, the ski boots come off in the parking lot and the migration begins β across Mountain Road, through the door, into the warm. In winter it's the definitive end-of-day ritual; in summer it's the back lawn. Either way, you don't need a plan. You just end up here.
The bar is a proper Vermont bar, in their own words: local drafts, cold cans, and a full well. The tap lineup reads like a greatest-hits of Vermont brewing β Long Trail, Lawson's Sip of Sunshine, Switchback, Fiddlehead, Zero Gravity, Burlington Beer Co. Regulars have their loyalties and their stools. If you want the full experience, ask what's pouring and take the recommendation.

The food is where the sign's joke falls apart completely. Everything smoked is smoked in-house; everything else is made from scratch. Brisket, pulled pork, burgers, loaded nachos β the hearty pub fare that a day on the mountain demands. And then there's the French onion soup, which has quietly become the thing people drive here for: overflowing with cheese, the kind of bowl that regulars describe the way other towns describe landmarks.
In summer, the action moves out back. The back lawn is the place to be β picnic tables, umbrellas, first come, first serve. Leashed dogs are allowed outside, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. It's the same crowd, the same menu, minus the ski boots.

What makes the Loft the Loft isn't any single dish or draft. It's that it's a local hangout first and a tourist stop second β "regulars and first-timers get the same treatment," as the crew puts it. Ski patrollers, lifties, condo owners, and day-trippers all end up at the same bar, and the room has the comfortable worn-in feel of a place that never tried to be anything other than what it is.
Practically speaking: The Loft Tavern sits at 300 Mountain Road in Ludlow, directly across from Okemo. It's open for lunch and dinner β (802) 975-0322 if you want to check hours before you head over. In ski season, go early or embrace the crowd; it gets packed for a reason. In summer, head straight for the lawn.
Every ski town has a bar like this, or wishes it did. Ludlow's just happens to have a sign that lies to your face about it. Order the French onion soup, get a Vermont draft, and you'll understand why nobody here would change a thing.
